GENERAL INFORMATION

The Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya and the Deparment de Ciència i Enginyeria Nàutiques de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya have considered of high interest to extend the supply of courses destined to the maritime sector and to offer the Maritime English Course with the aim of fullfilling the training requirements of the professionals of the maritime business.

Designed to give the students the necessary knowledge of maritime technical English, it provides a good command of vocabulary and of communication skills.

This postgraduate course benefits with the cooperation of highly experienced professionals with an excellent knowledge of technical English and experienced lecturers.

On the objective to facilitate the learning all the sessions will count on a practical part of oral expression and written expression.

In this new edition has been included a new part of technical writing with the aim of facilitating the drafting of technical documents to the student.

  • PART 1: Tecnhical writing: Introduction to technical writing, the writing profess and types of documents.
  • PART 2: Marine Technology: Merchant ships. Types of merchant ships. Crew, manning and contracts. Navigation bridge. Marine engines. Shiphandling. Elements of loading, unloading and stowage of cargo.
  • PART 3: Communications: Electronic navigational phrases. Seaspeak Training Manual. The key to effective communication:avoiding risks and accidents.
  • PART 4: Maritime Law: International organisations. International Conventions (SOLAS, IMDG, STCW, and others). International Law. Maritime Law. Law of the sea. Insurance and main policy forms and clauses. P+I associations.
  • PART 5: Shipyards and shipbuilding: Shipbuilding procedures and materials used. Naval architecture. Shipyards, dry docks, slipways. Maintenance and repairs.
  • PART 6: Ship calling in por. Shiphusbandry: Activity of the shipping agents. Inbound and outbound clearance of vessels. Paperwork and representation vis-a-vis the port authorities. Crewmembers signing on and off. Vessel's international safety certificates. Medical assistance to crewmwmbers. Repatriation of disembarking crewmwmbers for leave, sickness, casualty of not reporting to ship's departure. The issue of stowaways.
  • PART 7: Harbour operations: Commercial ports and yacht marinas. Vocabulary for port administration. Types of terminals. Docks, berths and manoeuvring in port. Pilots. Concessions and port facilities. Enterprises, organisations and companies operating in the harbour limits.
  • PART 8: Passenger ships, ferry's and RoPax: History and the state of the passenger shipping industry today, including ocean liners, cruise ships, traditional ferries, cruiseferries and RoRo ferries (RoPax). The commonalities and differences among passenger shipping modalities. Elements of the modern cruise industry and cruise ship. Passenger terminals, necessary port facilities and transportation infrastructure. Regulations regarding the environment and passenger/ship security. Tourism opportunitie, itinerary palanning and local economic development.
  • PART 9: Safety and prevention of pollution: Surveys and inspections. Memorandum of Paris. International SOLAS Convention. Safety equipment. International MARPOL Convention and waste treatment.
  • PART 10: Shipping business: The shipowning company. Management of a shipping company. Maritime traffic. Short sea-shipping. Joint ventures and pool.s Mergers and acquisitions. Shipping lines and tramp services. Ferry ships, Ro-Pax and cruise ships.
